The Liminist

The opposite of the specialist is not the generalist. It is the Liminist — someone who specialises in the interzones between domains rather than in any one of them.

Specialist < Generalist < Liminist

The opposite of the specialist is not the generalist, but the Liminist.

Where the generalist picks the low-hanging fruit of knowledge, the Liminist operates in the liminal interzones between them.

A Liminist is its own specialisation, but where all other domains specialise in form, the Liminist specialises in non-form. The evidence of their work exists at the intersections between objects. These intersections have their own space, presence, and tangibility.

In a world of disconnected silos stretching vertically into the sky, the Liminist stretches horizontally across them. They function as guides, navigating people across these intersecting planes to comprehend the work and ideas of their unrelated peers.

A talented Liminist must be a master translator who can communicate and comprehend across domains, a master diplomat who manages the egos of others after destroying their own, and a master guide who oversees others as they journey across the intersecting liminal planes of knowledge.

They must be comfortable operating in ambiguity. It is their playground.
